Madrid’s best Mexican food

Written by Laurence

The obvious links between Spain and Latin America mean that Madrid has an abundance of Mexican restaurants.  A fusion Aztec tradition and Spanish influence, modern day Mexican cuisine is famous for its vibrant and sharp flavors, and its contrasting mixture of fresh crisp vegetables with slow cooked meats and deep, earthy sauces.  Visitors from the Mexican food obsessed USA will feel right at home with the abundance of excellent quality Mexican food available in Madrid.  The list of Mexican restaurants in Madrid is almost endless, but here we’ve selected some which are truly worthy of your appetite.

La Taqueria de Birra

La Taqueria de Birra mexican_in_madridis a stalwart of the Latino district, and one of the earliest authentic Mexican restaurants to do trade in Madrid.  Their authentic tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas bring to mind true fresh flavours of vibrant Mexico, with a touch of old Aztec tradition.  Relaxed and bright decor, along with their friendly service make this one of Madrid’s top Mexican stops. (Calle Don Pedro 11, 28005)

Noqno

Slightly east of the city’s edge, alongside the airport, is not necessarily where one would expect to find a beautiful, classy and delicious dining experience.  But Noqno offers this and more.  You’ll be glad you travelled out of the city centre for a meal here, as evidenced by their consistently smashing online reviews. Try their signature dish, the slow cooked duck in a chocolate and onion sauce, and their homemade ice cream with Mexican chocolate and chilli sauce is sensational.  (Calle Bahía de Palma, 7A 28042)

Rosa Negra Madrid

Rosa Negra Madrid offers a beautiful dining experience which is typically Mexican: colourful, bright, fun, light, tasty and fresh.  Their specialities include a uniquely Mexican shrimp cocktail, delicious Mexican rice dishes, and they pride themselves on their famous homemade guacamole, which can come either “fresh” or “extra spicy”.  Be sure to order a few drinks from the well-stocked and imaginatively creative cocktail bar.  Surroundings are quirky and artfully adorned with traditional treasures from across the Atlantic.  (Calle León, 16 28014)

La Venganza de Malinche

mexican-mix-_Madrid_restaurantsTrue Mexican cuisine brings to mind fresh, buzzing, zingy, lively, spicy flavours, and these adjectives and more only begin to describe the brilliant food at La Venganza de Malinche (your waiter will happily explain the meaning of the restaurant’s name!)  This authentic Mexican restaurant has three branches in Madrid.  The restaurants also have a bar and lively nightlife, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find typical bar food – this is really some of the best Mexican dining to be found just about anywhere. A fantastic lunch menu of €10 gives you a starter, main dish, dessert, and beer or wine.  Try the incredible Centro Azteca (slow-cooked chicken in a velvety chocolate sauce) or the Centro Pastor (pork stew with guacamole and caramelised onions).  (Various, for example, Plaza de San Martín, 2)
