Getting Your NIE in Madrid

How to do the NIE in Madrid is one of the first things you should learn when planning to move into the city as a foreigner. Even before looking for Madrid beach apartments it might be wise to understand the process of getting your NIE if you plan to stay longer than three months in Spain.

What is an NIE? 

NIE, Numero de Identidad de Extranjero, is a personal identification number required to do most financial things in Spain. If you want to buy a home, open a bank account, apply for Social Security, get a loan even got a job you will need this governmental identifier. Any European seeking to live in Spain who was not born in the country is required to apply for an NIE if they plan to stay within the country longer than three months. Remember that even your children will need this special identifier when moving to Spain. This process needs to be done within the first 60 days of arriving in Spain.

NIE Procedures

As a first time NIE applicant, you will need to follow a specific procedure in order to receive your certification.  The first step is to collect the necessary documentation and fill out the required forms. Form EX16 can be accessed online, printed, filled out and brought to your appointment in the following steps. Remember that all documentation, interviews, and appointments will be conducted in Spanish. If you need a translator ensure to bring one with you to all appointments. The form EX16 is also available from the location where you will have your appointment but it is better to have it filled out prior to arriving. You will also need photocopies of all pages of an unexpired passport with supporting photo identification. If you are intending to bring your children with you their original birth certificates will need to be for copied and official translations provided as well. At the time of your appointment, you will also need to pick up the form “impresa 790” in order to pay your registration fee at an approved banking instForm EX15itution, listed on the form.

Next, you will need to make an appointment with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, by calling this number 902 56 57 01. Make sure to ask about the necessary documents needed and where your specific appointment will be. Be sure to show up for your appointment up to one hour early and be prepared to wait a while. Once you have your appointment, in Spanish, you will receive your NIE at the same time with instructions to pay the fee at a nearby bank. There are some companies that provide NIE services that can often make the process easier and faster.
