The terrace at the Gourmet section becomes at night a trendy place, full with modern people enjoying good food and overpriced, gin tonics.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"cervantes-for-real\"><\/span><strong>Cervantes <\/strong><strong>for real<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From Callao walk down all the way to plaza Espa\u00f1a and picture-pose a moment with Cervantes enormous statue at the fountain in the middle. Catch a quick glimpse of the Temple de Debod, located nearby in the Parque de Oeste, which is an Egyptian temple that was given as a gift to Spain by Egypt for helping out preventing a flood.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"royal-spot\"><\/span><strong>Royal Spot<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From Plaza Espa\u00f1a,\u00a0walk on to the most majestically and relaxing part of the city centre, the Plaza de Oriente. Here you can visit de Royal Palace or just relax a bit on the nice but expensive terraces in front of the opera. This one of my favourite spots in the city as you really can feel and see the in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3223 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC0203\" width=\"449\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203-810x539.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203-1140x759.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC0203.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a>credible history of Madrid at this spot. On Sundays, you sometimes can watch local street singers or tango dancers on this square in front of the Opera or the Palace.<\/p>\n<p>The statues of all the Spanish Kings in this park were initially to be placed on top of the palace but when Isabel II had a nightmare about the statues falling on top of her, they were finally placed in the park next to the palace.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"best-bocadillo-sandwich-in-the-world\"><\/span><strong>Best bocadillo (sandwich) in the world<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From the plaza Oriente, it&#8217;s a perfect walk to plaza mayor where you can stop by for a delicious bocadillo de calamares with a ca\u00f1a in one of its side streets, or in winter time order some chocolat<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3222 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres-300x265.jpg\" alt=\"bocadillo calameres\" width=\"365\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres-768x677.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres-1024x903.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres-810x714.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres-1140x1005.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bocadillo-calameres.jpg 1924w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a>e and churros at famous chocolateria San Gines. Do you a fancy more tapas style lunch then hit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/mercado-de-san-miguel-a-great-atmosphere-and-excellent-tapas\/\">Mercado de San Miguel <\/a>for some amazing tapa treats, and if you like, some excellent vermouth from the tap.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to check out the Arcos de los Cuchilleros, and if you fancy something sweet, buy some homemade cookies at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/madrids-secret-spots\/\">monastery Las Carboneras,<\/a> still run by nuns who aren&#8217;t allowed to expose themselves, so the sweets they sell are exchanged through a curious, sliding door system. For a more extensive lunch with the bests roasts of Madrid visit <a title=\"Casa Botin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/casa-botin-the-oldest-restaurant-in-the-world\/\">Casa de sobrino de Bot\u00edn<\/a>, the oldest restaurant in the world, famous for its roasted suckling pig and one of Hemingway&#8217;s favourite restaurants in town.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"amazing-tapa-at-the-heart-of-the-city-centre\"><\/span><strong>Amazing Tapa at the heart of the city centre<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From plaza mayor,\u00a0follow the crowd to the heart of the city centre, la Puerta del Sol, picture pose with the famo<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1888 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/DSC9160-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>us Madro\u00f1o bear in the middle, and check out the 0-kilometre point in front of the old post office, now a regional government building. When you have found the Tio Pepe sign, treat yourself with a ca\u00f1a and a delicious fried cod tapa at <a title=\"Casa Labra\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/3-famous-must-visit-tapas-bars-in-madrid\/\">Casa Labra<\/a>. For a more old-style elegant lunch visit Lhardy, a magnificent, old, but also very touristy restaurant that has served food for over more than 175 years, and was already frequently visited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1847.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Literary Quarter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the Puerta del Sol its an excellent starting point to do some exploring at the barrio de Las letras, famous for the writers who used to live there. Pass by the house of Lope de Vega and Cervantes and check out the Athen\u00e6um of Madrid, a cultural centre, adorned with Greek Revival paintings.<\/p>\n<p>End the day with more ca\u00f1as and tapas with for example a relaxing fino at the ancient bar La Venencia or check out the super trendy Glass Bar for an expensive cocktail, or hit Cerveceria Quevedo if you are on a tighter budget. If you fancy some live music you can watch a Flamenco show at Villa Rosa or Casa Patas. For some great late night dancing, visit La Boca del Lobo, a trendy club with DJ\u00b4s.
