The area occupied by the plaza today used to be the site of the Convent of Santa Ana, also known as <em>Convento de las Carmelitas Decalzas<\/em>, which had been built during the sixteenth century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1810, Jos\u00e9 I ordered the destruction of the convent and adjoining houses in order to create a plaza with a garden and to start the urban sanitation of the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are a number of notable buildings and businesses in the plaza like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teatroespanol.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Teatro Espa\u00f1ol<\/strong><\/a>, Cerveceria Alemana and Hotel Reina Victoria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The absolute epicenter of <strong>Madrid<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong> celebration, <strong>Puerta del Sol Square <\/strong>is one of the most popular squares in the city, and one of the busiest places in Madrid.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"plaza-mayor\"><\/span><strong>Plaza Mayor <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Plaza Mayor <\/strong>is one of the most popular squares in Madrid, built during Philip III\u2019s reign during the seventeenth century.\u00a0 This large, rectangular plaza is surrounded by three-story residential buildings and is often used for municipal and cultural functions.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"puerta-del-sol\"><\/span><strong>Puerta del Sol<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Puerta del Sol<\/strong> was one of the original gates of the city of Madrid during the fifteenth-century, becoming an important meeting place between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Puerta del Sol<\/strong> has a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shmadrid.com\/blog\/en\/casa-botin-the-oldest-restaurant-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">famous<\/a> buildings and landmarks, like the statue of Charles II of Spain and te bear and madrone tree statue, by artist Antonio Navarro Santaf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most important point in <strong>Porta del Sol square <\/strong>is perhaps the old Post Office building, that serves today as the office of the President of Madrid. The square is surrounded by historical buildings such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Casa_Gallardo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Casa Gallardo<\/a><\/strong>, Edif\u00edcio Espa\u00f1a and the tower of Madrid.
