But it was only when he moved to <strong>Madrid<\/strong>, where he was employed painting frescos at the Basilica del Pilar in the city, that his talents become recognised. The peak of his career was when <strong>Goya<\/strong> released a series of engraved prints based on Vel\u00e1zquez\u2019s paintings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So impressed were the board of Madrid\u2019s Royal Academy that <strong><a title=\"Goya Madrid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francisco_Goya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Goya<\/a><\/strong> was\u00a0 appointed Deputy Director of Painting, and was later awarded the role of \u00a0court painter. Towards the end of the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century, <strong>Goya<\/strong> became seriously ill, which affected his work for many years. During the early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, at the peak of the war between France and Spain, <strong>Goya<\/strong> gained certain notoriety through his works portraying the horrors of that war, as well as others surrealistic efforts that saw him gradually fall from favour in the Conservative artistic circles of that time.\u00a0 <strong>Goya<\/strong> left Madrid and continued painting in the city of Bordeaux. After his passing, his remains were returned to Madrid. But it wasn&#8217;t all gloom. <strong>Hemingway<\/strong> also enjoyed\u00a0the feverish nightlife that the city still managed to offer, writing one of his famous novels &#8216;To Have and Have Not&#8217; \u00a0in 1937, as well as his only play, The Fifth Column.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"placido-domingo\"><\/span><strong>Pl\u00e1cido Domingo<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarded a one of the most talented tenors in the world, <strong>Pl\u00e1cido Domingo<\/strong> was born and raised in <strong>Madrid,<\/strong> although he\u00a0moved with his family to Mexico City when he was still a young man. After finishing a course of study in Mexico, <strong>Domingo<\/strong> returned to Europe, making his home in <strong>Madrid<\/strong>, where he continue to study and diversify his musical talents, eventually becoming a classical pianist, orchestra conductor\u00a0 and opera singer. <strong>Domingo<\/strong> sprang to international fame as a result of his musical collaboration with other world-famous tenors, Jos\u00e9 Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"penelope-cruz\"><\/span><strong>Pen\u00e9lope Cruz<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Pen\u00e9lope Cruz<\/strong>, one of Hollywood&#8217;s most famous Spanish actresses, was born in the suburb of Alcobendas in <strong>Madrid. Pen\u00e9lope<\/strong> began her career as a dancer and later became an actress on Spanish television. From there, her fame began to spread. She took some time off from her television career to study classical ballet at Madrid\u2019s National Conservatory, returning to the small screen only in her early twenties. It wasn\u2019t too long before <strong>Pen\u00e9lope<\/strong> graduated into films.
