Madrid is divided into 21 districts, each one containing several neighbourhoods (or \u201cbarrios\u201d, in Spanish). To help you start to understand the city\u2019s geography and make it easier for you to get around in the capital of Spain, ShMadrid<\/strong><\/a> has listed them all below, together with some useful information.<\/p>\n

Centro<\/strong> –<\/strong> This is the central district of Madrid, containing\u00a0the neighbourhoods of Palacio, Embajadores, Cortes, Universidade (home to the popular Malasa\u00f1a barrio) and Justicia (which includes Chueca, a square that is famous for its vibrant gay<\/a> <\/strong>nightlife).<\/p>\n

Arganzuela –<\/strong> Contains the neighbourhoods of Imperial, Acacias, La Chopera, Legazpi, Delicias, Palos de Moguer and, most notably, Atocha<\/strong><\/a>, where the city’s main railway station is located.<\/p>\n

Retiro –<\/strong> Located southeast of the city centre, it comprises the neighbourhoods of Pacifico, Adelfas, Estrella, Ibiza, Jer\u00f3nimos and Nin\u00f5 Jes\u00fas.<\/p>\n

Salamanca –<\/strong> Not to be confused with the city of the same name, this northeastern district contains 7 barrios – Recoletos, Goya, Parque de las Avenidas, Fuente del Berro, Guindalera, Lista and Castellana.<\/p>\n

Chamartin<\/strong> – <\/strong>This important district is home to Real Madrid’sSantiago Bernab\u00e9u stadium<\/a><\/strong>, the Chamartin railway station (which is the second largest in Spain) and the Cuatro Torres Business Area, where the four tallest skyscrapers in the country are located. It includes the neighbourhoods of Castilla, Ciudad Jardin, El Viso, Hispanoam\u00e9rica, Nueva Espa\u00f1a and Prosperidad.<\/p>\n

Tetu\u00e0n<\/strong> – The district of Tetu\u00e1n contains the neighbourhoods of Bellas Vistas, Cuatro Caminos, Castillejos, Almenara, Valdeacederas and Berruguete.<\/p>\n

Chamberi<\/strong> – The barrios of Gaztambide, Arapiles, Trafalgar, Almagro, Vallehermoso and Rios Rosas are located here.<\/p>\n

Fuecarral-El Pardo –<\/strong> This is a very environmentally important district – the northern area of its El Pardo neighbourhood has been preserved as a royal hunting estate, while Monte de El Pardo has been classified as a Special Protection Area due to its birdlife. Its other 8 barrios are Fuentelarreina, Pe\u00f1agrande, Barrio del Pilar, La Paz, Valverde, Mirasierra and El Goloso.<\/p>\n

Moncloa-Aravaca –<\/strong> Home to the Palace of Moncloa, which is the residence of Spain’s Prime Minister. Its wards are Casa de Campo, Arg\u00fcelles, Ciudad Universitaria, Valdezarza, Valdemar\u00edn, El Plant\u00edo and Aravaca.<\/p>\n

Latina –<\/strong> Contains the barrios of Los C\u00e1rmenes, Puerta del \u00c1ngel, Lucero, Aluche, Las \u00c1guilas, Campamento and Cuatro Vientos.<\/p>\n

Carabanchel –<\/strong> This suburban area is comprised of 7 neighbourhoods: Abrantes, Buenavista, Comillas, Opa\u00f1el, Puerta Bonita, San Isidro and Vista Alegre.<\/p>\n

Usera –<\/strong> It’s where you’ll find the barrios of Orcasitas, Orcasur, San Ferm\u00edn, Almendrales, Moscard\u00f3, Zof\u00edo and Pradolongo.<\/p>\n

Puente de Vallecas –<\/strong> Forms the Vallecas geographical area with the district of Villa de Vallecas. Contains Entrev\u00edas, Numancia, Palomeras Bajas, Palomeras Sureste, Portazgo and San Diego.<\/p>\n

Villa de Vallecas –<\/strong> Mentioned above as part of the Vallecas area, it includes Casco Hist\u00f3rico de Vallecas and Santa Eugenia.<\/p>\n

Moratalaz –<\/strong> Once the home of legendary musician Alejandro Sanz<\/strong><\/a>, this district is divided into the neighbourhoods of Pavones, Horcajo, Marroquina, Media Legua, Fontarr\u00f3n and Vinateros.<\/p>\n

Ciudad Lineal –<\/strong> Ventas, Pueblo Nuevo, Quintana, La Concepci\u00f3n, San Pascual, San Juan Bautista, Colina, Atalaya and Pinar de Chamart\u00edn (Costillares) are the 9 wards that make up this district.<\/p>\n

Hortaleza –<\/strong> One of Madrid\u2019s most youthful districts, Hortaleza is also home to a large community of French immigrants. It’s divided into 6 wards: Palomas, Valdefuentes, Canillas, Pinar del Rey, Ap\u00f3stol Santiago and Piovera.<\/p>\n

Villaverde –<\/strong> A traditionally working class area, it is home to a lot of retirees and immigrants, due to cheaper housing prices when compared to other districts. It contains the barrios of Butarque, Los \u00c1ngeles, Los Rosales, San Crist\u00f3bal de los \u00c1ngeles and Villaverde Alto (also known as San Andr\u00e9s – but we do not advise you to go steal cars there).<\/p>\n

Vic\u00e1lvaro –<\/strong> A former village that contains the Casco Hist\u00f3rio de Vic\u00e1lvaro and Ambroz neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n

San Blas –<\/strong> Simancas, Hell\u00edn, Amposta, Arcos, Rosas, Rejas, Canillejas and Salvador are the 8 wards that compose this district.<\/p>\n

Barajas –<\/strong> This is where the Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas Airport<\/a><\/strong> is located. It’s divided into the neighbourhoods of Aeropuerto, Alameda de Osuna, Casco Hist\u00f3rico de Barajas, Corralejos and Tim\u00f3n (but no Pumbaa, sadly).<\/p>\n
