Madrid is the perfect place to spend a lovely Christmas, as this is where the best theatre performances are. Around this time of year, these plays manage to touch the Christmas spirit in each and every one of us.

Christmas plays you haven’t seen yet

Musicals are excellent for the whole family and the best excuse to leave your home in the middle of winter. Enjoy some of the best shows together with your loved ones.

Snoopy is one of the most interesting musicals if you want to go with your youngest children or nieces and nephews. The show will take place at Teatro Cofidís Alcazar on December 6 and 7. The theatre is located in the district of Retiro.

El Soldadito de Plomo (or The Steadfast Tin Soldier) is another musical you shouldn’t miss. This is a very touching story and a beautiful fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. You can see this play from December 21, also at the Cofidís Theatre.

Pica Pica is a very popular children’s group and they will organize a so-called Fiesta Party in the district of Centro at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía. There will be 12 children’s songs, like “Pinocchio went fishing”, and they will have a great time singing along with the characters.

Billy Elliot is still trendy and it continues to play this Christmas in the neighbourhood of Ibiza at the Teatro Nuevo Alcalá.

Of course, this is not the only musical that will make us shed a few tears, because Peter Pan is also playing. You can see it at Teatro Maravillas in Trafalgar. The musical has been a hit since its premiere on October 12, and it will continue to be performed until January 2020.

Gracias por venir is a very special play that pays tribute to Lina Morgan, one of the most important and beloved Spanish actresses. You can enjoy this play, starring Amanda Mora, in Teatro Arlequín in the district of Universidad.

Babies and children (from 0 to 5 years old) can also enjoy their time at the theatre with La banda mocosa, a musical project that encourages young children to dance and play instruments. From November 30 to January 11, 2020, at the Teatro Figaro.

Children are the ones who enjoy Christmas the most, and there is actually a number of theatre plays and shows that are especially for them, like Mari Pompas (whose great-grandmother is Mary Poppins). Mari Pompas can be seen at Sala Mirador from October 30.

A Christmas Carol is part comedy, part humour and also part music, and this is the perfect Christmas play. This version of Charles Dickens’ famous novel can be seen at Teatro Reina Victoria in English, although it will only have three shows during the month of December.

Koozå is the latest show by Cirque du Soleil, and it promises to absolutely amaze you this Christmas, as will the version of The Nutcracker performed by the Russian International Ballet at Teatro Nuevo Apolo in the neighbourhood of Embajadores from December 23.
